Top 8 Best Mario Kart Tracks

Super Mario Kart has turned 25. That’s right, it’s been almost three decades since Mario broke boundaries with a genre-defining racing game. To reminisce, we’ve picked out just some of our favourite tracks from the series history – the best Mario Kart tracks.

Moonview Highway (Mario Kart Wii)

There’s nothing quite like a city level in a Mario Kart game. Admiring the bright lights whilst skilfully dodging traffic; it has to be Moonview Highway. With plenty of speed zippers to reward tight turns and secret cliff-riding shortcuts, this is certainly one of the more standout tracks in Mario Kart Wii. A difficult course to learn, but a hugely rewarding one once mastered.

Royal Raceway (Mario Kart 8)

There’s nothing like a classic Mushroom Kingdom circuit to test those power-sliding skills. Every Mario Kart game has a staple trip through familiar terrain, but Royal Raceway stands out as the best of the bunch. With smooth turns through Princess Peach’s abode, there’s a giant leap of faith and that all-important corner before the finish. Add in the familiar Nintendo 64 racing jingle and the Mario Kart 8 version is a must for any multiplayer grand prix.

Delfino Square (Mario Kart Wii)

Delfino Square is an usual track to include in a top Mario Kart tracks selection, but a worthy contender. First introduced in Mario Kart DS, this particular track takes you through a bustling sea-side town. The highlight? Tight, Italian-esque, narrow corridors to stumble through, and a rewarding shortcut if the power-up suits. A challenging level for the Mario Kart newcomer; and a fun one for those manic online races. We can only hope Delfino Square makes an appearance in a future entry!

Daisy Cruiser (Mario Kart: Double Dash)

After all those adventures and partying it up with board games, it’s time for the Mario lot to take a much needed holiday. Well, that was the plan. Daisy Cruiser is a step away from the traditional circuits to something truly unique – who could ever say that they’ve go-karted on a cruise ship? Throw in an underground ballroom that’s torn out of Beauty & The Beast, and it’s a mad dash to the finish whilst avoiding tables and chairs.

Toad’s Turnpike (Mario Kart 64)

We certainly love a good dash through the city; and Toad’s Turnpike is where it all started. That cheeky little Mushroom has his own circuit; packed full of traffic to avoid. One of the most challenging levels in Mario Kart 64 that needed complete concentration. Blink and your poor pixelated kart has been thrown to one side. Broken. 1st place is soon a distant memory and it’s fortunate that the Nintendo 64 controllers can withstand a lot of damage. It’s definitely one of the best Mario Kart tracks, ever.

Avoid those cars!

Maple Treeway (Mario Kart Wii)

We’ve soared rainbows, giant mechanical clocks and even shopping malls, but how about a forest? Maple Treeway is another Mario Kart Wii highlight, where you’re zipping through branches and avoiding pesky caterpillars to try and nab that coveted first place rank.

Rainbow Road (Super Mario Kart)

No boundaries. It’s the final race for Mario Kart glory and the most challenging Rainbow Road circuit to date. A trip across the cosmos, avoiding those pesky Thwomps and trying to stay on the track. Imagine racing on a piece of paper with no sidewalls. The original and certainly the best Rainbow Road; and we’re glad it made a return in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Bowser’s Castle (Mario Kart 64)

There couldn’t be a best Mario Kart tracks blog without the inclusion of at least one of the numerous Bowser’s Castles. One of the highlights has to be the gloomy, melancholic Nintendo 64 version; complete with tight corridors, trips across turrets and the return of those ever-pesky Thwomps.

Bowser's Castle is one of our best Mario Kart tracks, ever!
