One of our favourite cosplayers here at TeeChu has to be Scuba Steph! You may have seen Scuba Steph’s fantastic cosplay as Judge Dredd, Ash from the Pokémon animé or Mei from Overwatch – her creations are bold, striking, detailed and this law enforcer is certainly one to watch. We’re thrilled to see Stephanie loving our Pokémon shirt too!
Scuba Steph tells us what it means to cosplay, tales from her adventure so far, and also the upcoming Nerdbot Con!

1. Hi Scuba Steph, tell us a little bit about you!
I’m just a nerdy girl who loves to have fun! I work for Nerdbot, a Nerd Media company and I love what I do!
When I’m not cosplaying I’m playing video games or spending time with my Nerdbot Girls. I also love wine!
2. What made you get into cosplay?
I’ve always been interested in cosplay but what got me to start cosplaying was my love for Halloween. Every year I anticipate Halloween and plan out my costume months ahead of time so once I realized I can do this any time of the year with cosplay, I quickly became all about it!
3. Your cosplay looks fab, we’re big fans of your Dredd look! What’s your favorite creation so far?
My Dredd is still my favorite and it might always be my favorite because of how much I love the character. It’s the one costume that’s taken the longest for me to put together through making parts and also purchased parts. One of my favorite movies is Dredd and being able to act as the character has been a dream come true!
I also work in the legal field as a paralegal so being Dredd fits right in with my lifestyle.
4. What’s the hardest part of cosplaying for you?
The hardest part of cosplaying would be when I go as Dredd only because I can’t fit my glasses under the helmet so I’m blind at any conventions or events I go to. Maybe it’s time to purchase some contacts, lol.
5. What’s the most challenging prop you’ve worked on so far?
Luckily most of my props I modify from other props. For instance, my law giver is a kids nerf gun that I sanded down, spray painted matte black and detailed after. I’ve yet to have a challenging prop experience! *knocks on wood!*
6. Who would you say is your biggest inspiration in cosplay?
All of the wonderful cosplayers I see at conventions! They always amaze me!
7. What character are you working on next and what would be your dream cosplay?
I’m currently working on D.Va from Overwatch! I’m modifying her headset and weapon so I can wear her hopefully by next month.
My dream cosplay I’ve always wanted to accomplish is being a stormtrooper!
8. For someone starting out in cosplay, what advice would you give?
Just have fun! If you’re not having fun you’re doing it wrong. Get in your cosplay gear and go! Everyone I’ve met in the cosplay community has become my family. They are some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. So don’t overthink it, just DO IT! MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE!
9. What would you say the best thing is about cosplay?
The best thing is the friends you meet. My group of friends has improved drastically by meeting cosplayers. Cosplayers are talented, artistic, nerdy people. Who doesn’t want those friends in your life?
10. What games are you playing at the moment?
Overwatch. Every. Day.
11. Scuba Steph – What’s your favourite comic book or gaming character?
Dredd is my favorite comic book character. I have 7 of his comics but my favorite is the Batman/Judge Dredd collection.
My favorite gaming character is Pharah from Overwatch. She is a bad ass hero that has a rocket launcher and she can fly! Yes please!
12. What are your plans for future cons?
I would love to make a Mei from Overwatch cosplay since I already have glasses similar to hers. It seems like it would be pretty simple, the only problem is her costume is meant for winter. And I live in California. So that might be a bit uncomfortable for me but I still want to do it!
13. So tell us a bit more about Nerdbot-Con! What can attendees expect?
Nerdbot-Con is a one day event, nerd & cosplay convention in the Pasadena Convention Center!
We will have a stage with live music, performances, a ton of vendors, cosplay contest, super smash brothers tournament, panels, and an after party at Dave and Buster’s with DJ’s & Karaoke! It’s going to be a blast!
