Who is Princess Peach? 5 Facts of Royalty

Nintendo have created distinctive faces over the years. From aspiring elvish heroes to flatulent treasure hunters, they have stood the test of time. Arguably one of the most popular of the Nintendo folk must be Princess Peach! To celebrate her majesty, we’ve uncovered five interesting facts. Just who is Princess Peach?

Having starred in a tonne of games and rare gems over the years, she has made her mark as a true gaming legend. A tough, sassy leader of the Mushroom Kingdom with an ‘eart of gold. Or Mushrooms. Either way, Peach is definitely one of our favourites!

Princess Peach is a Cherry, Mushroom and a Toadstool

Ever wondered where “Princess Toadstool” came from? The Mushroom Kingdom legend goes by the name “Peach” these days, but she once had a very different name. “Princess Toadstool” was used for the earlier games, due to localisation. It all became canon, much like Eggman and Doctor Robotnik, in the mid ’90s! From Super Mario 64, Princess Peach finally had her definitive name.

Other versions include “Princess Cherry” in Italian, “Princess Peach Flower” in Chinese and “The Princess Mushroom” in Norwegian.

A Legendary Game Boy Cameo

In recent years Princess Peach has moved onto become her own defined character. However, her original role was more the generic damsel in distress. After the success of Mario attempting to save Pauline in the arcade hit Donkey Kong, designer Shigeru Miyamoto was pondering a new female character. Inspired by the antics of Popeye, Nintendo attempted to seal a deal for a new platforming game with Olive Oyl and Popeye at the helm. It became the story that never was, with Nintendo going onto brew Mario instead!

Nintendo usually sneak in the odd cameo or two! We’ve seen Mario characters in Zelda games, but how about Peach in a Zelda adventure? In Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Link receives photo of a character called “Christine” in that might look a little familiar!

An inclusion in the Forbes Fictional Rich List

Nintendo let players take on multiple characters in Super Mario Bros. 2, including the Princess and her adorable assistant, Toad. Peach moved away from the damsel architype for the first time, battling protagonist against Wart, a devious toad. Eventually the starring, solo, feature came in the underrated DS gem, Super Princess Peach.
