Inktober 2018 Highlights – From Zelda to Pokémon

It’s hard to believe that October passed by with a blue and Christmas is weeks away. Christmas. 2019. Where did the year disappear to? October is always a fun month to trickle through, with the annual Inktober tradition. We’ve taken on the drawing challenge for three years now – 31 challenging prompts set by Jake Parker, an artist. For more details, be sure to see the Inktober website.

Inktober 2018 Highlights

We’ve picked out a handful of our favourite Inktober 2018 prompts, including “guarded” and “jolt” – For more, be sure to view our spin-off gaming art account, @Inkywash!

One expensive wooden shield

The Inktober 2018 prompt “expensive” was a really tricky one to forge. What items in gaming could be expensive? One of the options could have been the Big Goron Sword from Zelda: Ocarina of Time. That was a toughie! Instead, a similar moment from the game: the Deku Shield. This slab of wood was vital for any wandering hero, and was a challenge to save up for at the begging of the 1998 classic!

Protecting the Star

“Guarded” was one of the Inktober prompts that again was a challenge to pen! The stars in Super Mario 64 were scattered throughout the land, some harder to collect than others! Remember that feisty chain chomp that protected that glowing star? Mario would need to sneak about and avoid the beast’s rather sharp teeth!

Fancy a slice of PokéPizza?

Who can resist the adorable electric beast, Jolteon? For the final couple of Inktober days, we combined two prompts – “Jolt” and “Slice”, with the prickly critter nibbling on a slice of delicious PokéPizza!

Torchic is out for lunch

The fire chicken nabs the caterpillar! A more straightforward Inktober theme this time round, with a doodle for “chicken”. The Pokémon Torchic is perhaps one of the most adorable of all the cocks, and here it is in a middle of its own catch!

To be cruel or not to be cruel

Who’d want to draw something to the theme of “cruel”? This particular Inktober 2018 prompt was a strange one, so we went for something a little nicer – remember Tentacruel? The fearsome beast doesn’t destroy buildings in this sketch, but is instead relaxing with a classic Game Boy!

Thunder, feel the thunder!

This electric prompt lead us to stroll into the world of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Remember that eccentric-looking helm from the Gerudo? This was perhaps the trickiest drawing we penned during Inktober, with all the intricate gem details proving a little difficult!

A hand in the loo

It’s a triple threat of franchises in this Inktober prompt for “drain”. Remember that hand that lurks in the toilet? A staple from the Legend of Zelda series is a slightly creepy hand that just wants a little, well, love. Combine that with Pokémon and Mario for an odd-looking concoction!
